A green method for the determination of cocaine in illicit samples

2013

Abstract Direct determination of cocaine in untreated seized samples has been made based on diffuse reflectance measurements of the near infrared (NIR) radiation through samples contained inside standard glass vials. The method used a series of previously analyzed samples, by the reference gas chromatography method, to build a partial least squares calibration model which was validated using an independent set of samples. The use of a general model for samples containing from 11.38% till 86.44% (w/w) cocaine was based on the use of spectral ranges from 12500.7 to 10128.6, 9339.8 to 6967.7 and 5388.3 to 4597.6 cm−1 with previous first derivative and vector normalization data pre-processing a…

True Nanoferroics with the Properties Absent in Corresponding Bulk Samples

2013

The Chapter covers the theoretical and experimental approaches to the investigations of the physical properties, which are inherent in ferroics of nanosize and absent in corresponding bulk materials. Namely, the strong surface influence along with other effects of geometrical confinement generates number of physical effects, which do not occur in bulk ferroics samples. One example of such phenomena is room-temperature ferromagnetism in nanoparticles and thin films of undoped CeO2, HfO2, SnO2, Al2O3 and other nonmagnetic (in bulk samples) oxides. Theo other striking example is appearance of so-called spontaneous flexoeffects (i.e. flexoelectric, flexomagnetic, flexoelastic) in ferroic nanosa…

Biological tolerance of different materials in bulk and nanoparticulate form in a rat model: sarcoma development by nanoparticles

2006

In order to study the pathobiological impact of the nanometre-scale of materials, we evaluated the effects of five different materials as nanoparticulate biomaterials in comparison with bulk samples in contact with living tissues. Five groups out of 10 rats were implanted bilaterally for up to 12 months with materials of the same type, namely TiO 2 , SiO 2 , Ni, Co and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), subcutaneously with bulk material on one side of the vertebral column and intramuscularly with nanoparticulate material on the contralateral side. At the end of each implantation time, the site was macroscopically examined, followed by histological processing according to standard techniques. Malign…

Anomalous magnetic hysteresis in the microwave surface resistance of MgB2 superconductor

2007

We report experimental results of the field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance in samples of MgB2, produced by different methods. By sweeping the DC magnetic field at increasing and decreasing values, we have detected a magnetic hysteresis that can be ascribed to the different magnetic induction, due to the critical state of the fluxon lattice. The hysteresis observed in the bulk samples has an unusual shape, which cannot be justified in the framework of the critical-state models.
